U.S. Faces Power Capacity Challenges in AI Competition with China
미국, 중국과의 AI 경쟁 속에 전력난 직면

Google’s global head of energy market development, Caroline Golin, warned of a power capacity crisis as the U.S. competes with China in AI development.
미국이 중국과 AI 개발 경쟁을 벌이는 가운데 전력 용량 위기가 발생할 수 있다고 구글의 글로벌 에너지 시장 개발 책임자 캐롤라인 골린이 경고했다.
The company initially aimed for carbon-free renewable energy but found it insufficient for data centers. This has led to a pivot toward nuclear power.

The project is in a test phase, with Kairos approved to build test reactors in Tennessee.

Golin stressed the importance of partnerships with electric utilities for broader deployment across the board.

The nuclear industry sees tech’s demand as a catalyst for growth, with Amazon investing $500 million in small reactors, while Microsoft’s plans to restart Three Mile Island are in the pipeline.
원자력 업계도 기술 기업들의 수요를 성장 동력으로 보고 있다. 아마존은 소형 원자로에 5억 달러를 투자했고, 마이크로소프트는 스리마일섬 원전 재가동을 추진 중이다.
However, nuclear is a long-term solution, whereas AI competition with China requires immediate capacity.
다만 원자력은 장기적인 해결책인 반면, 중국과의 AI 경쟁은 즉각적인 용량 확보가 필요하다.
